about

Hornsman Skank was actually a version of an old UK dubplate by the Black Brothers called Do You Want To Know which was doing the sound system circuit around 1980/1981. Hughie Izachaar played bass and did the vocals. It was the same lineup who did the Come Mek We Run tune that was another big UK dubplate at the time. And riddim wise the same musicians including Hughie also made the legendary Marshall which was voiced by Ras Imru and became one of Jah Shaka’s earliest releases.
I loved the tune the first time I heard it and I had my own cut which was voiced by Errol Bellot as a special for Jah Warrior sound. I’d had it in the back of my mind to do my own version for quite a while and eventually I got round to it. The riddim was laid at Conscious Sounds with Dougie doing the drums and myself playing everything else. I wanted horns on it as the original had trombone, so to make it a bit different I had Digi Step play sax, using the same horn line as on the original but also with some variation.
Later on I took it to Disciples studio and had Russ Disciples do the finished mixes. It was an instrumental horns led steppers so I called it Hornsman Skank.
The other side was an original riddim of mine called Zion Meditation, done in a one drop style. It was recorded and mixed at Conscious Sounds and again featured horns from Digi Step, who also laid down melodica.
The release came out on Jah Warrior 10 inch in 2007.

Produced by Jah Warrior and recorded at Conscious Sounds. Hornsman Skank mixed at Disciples Studio, Zion Meditation mixed at Conscious Sounds. Features Dubkasm founder Digi Step on Sax and Melodica. Released on 10 inch in 2007
